 Working with natural oils

When creating oil blends use the power of  3, meaning find 3 oils that create synergy and stop. Your oil blends are better the fewer oils you choose to use. The more simple the mixture the less likely one oil will interfere with the performance of another oil.

When purchasing your oils be sure they state cold pressed or unrefined on the bottle, if it does not have it written on the bottle then do not buy it. You want unrefined oils that have not been exposed to large amounts of heat. The heat destroys the healing properties of the oil. Cold pressed oils are processed differently and their nutrients and minerals remain intact.. Be careful when purchasing oils from the grocery store, especially coconut oil, because many times it will say refined on the bottle. Now the refined coconut oil will still give your shine and a few other benefits, but it will not be nutrient rich enough to use as a pre-conditioning treatment, because refined oils have been refined by harsh heat.  Any oil you purchase at the grocery store read the front really good before buying.

Your oils are just like food they are meant to be used and not stored. When you buy your oils, buy with the intention to use them immediately. Store your oils in a dry dark closet or cabinet. Heat destroys the healing properties of the oils. When you purchase an essential oil it should always come in a dark, glass bottle, usually amber or cobalt blue. The colored glass keeps light from entering and destroying the healing properties of the oil. Do not store your oils in the hot kitchen nor in your steamy bathroom.

In your hair journal write down the date in which you purchased your oil so you can keep up with the ones which are about to expire. When an oil is bad, it usually has a cloudy look to it and it smells different, when in doubt just throw it out. Natural oils can be costly so use your oils and do not store them.

Recipes to be used with the CoilyQueens Method

(For your stimulating oil mix you can choose from scalp stimulant 1,2, or 3)

Scalp  stimulants #1
(to be used along with the Vee's Sauna Method)
2 tablespoon of jojoba oil
7 drops of pure peppermint oil
3 drops of  eucalyptus oil
Why this works. Peppermint oil and eucalyptus oil both increase circulation to the scalp area when applied and massaged in. The jojoba rebalances sebum production and nourishes the scalp. These factors working together create more hair growth when used consistently. More benefits when you add heat.

How to use:
Massage into scalp for 10 minutes before the Vee's Sauna Method or by itself 3 times a week, this mixture will stimulate tired tight scalp muscles and your hair root, producing better blood circulation, therefore increasing your hair growth rate.  (Note this is a growth stimulant so concentrate on your scalp area the most, when massage is finished you can then distribute the oil that is left on your hands throughout your hair strands.)

Scalp stimulant #2
1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil
4 drops of ginger oil
Why does this work? EVOO is a natural DHT blocker. DHT is a leading cause of hair loss. Ginger oil is a stimulant which increase blood flow within the scalp therefore producing more hair growth

How to use:
Massage into scalp for 10 minutes. This blend warms your scalp and increases blood circulation to your hair roots increasing hair growth. This blend can also be used with the Vee's Sauna Method.

Scalp stimulant #3
1 tablespoon of coconut oil (extra virgin cold pressed)
3-7 drops of pure peppermint oil***

This oil works to strengthen your hair roots and stimulate hair growth, your scalp will tingle after massaging this into your scalp.

How to use:
Create mix starting with adding 3 drops massage into scalp  for 3 minutes if you do not feel a tingle then add more drops of PPO up to 7 drops. Massage into your scalp for 10 minutes every other day as a hair growth stimulant and strengthener.

Hair softner
1/4 cup of Emu oil
1/2 cup of Sunflower oil
1/4 cup of Almond oil
Why do these oils soften your hair shaft? Emu oil and sunflower oil are full of essential fatty acids these fatty acids soften the hair strands and provides protection from harmful UV rays. Almond oil is full of magnesium and vitamins B, D and E all of which soften the hair and nourish the scalp.

How to use:
This makes one cup of oil, you will use 1/2 tablespoon per application more if your hair is longer and very thick. Massage on scalp and hair strands. Not only will this soften your hair but these oils also aide in hair growth. Massage throughout hair for 10 minutes and you should feel the results of extra softness after one application. For dry brittle hair use daily for two weeks, then add to your regimen 3 times a week.

Hair strengthener:
1/2 cup castor oil
1/2 cup avocado oil
1 cup of coconut oil
Why do these oils strengthen the hair? Avocado and Coconut oil penetrate the cortex and fill in the weak spaces in the hair strands. Coconut oil reduces the amount of protein loss during wash routines. These oils are full of magnesium, calcium, iron and potassium which are vital for healthy hair. Castor oil also softens and strengthens your hair strands.

How to use:
If your hair is very weak and breaking a lot, apply this oil mixture to your hair strands thoroughly. Saturating each hair strand daily. You can add 7 drops of peppermint oil to help with scalp circulation, if desired.

Clarifying scalp treatment #1:
2 tablespoons of jojoba oil
5 drops of rosemary oil
5 drops of sage oil
How do these oils work to cleanse the scalp? Jojoba oil removes excess sebum and cholesterol from the scalp.  Rosemary and sage are both anti bacterial.

How to use:
Massage vigorously into your scalp for 5 minutes, then lightly scrub scalp with a soft bristle toothbrush. Proceed with applying herbal mud wash to your hair strands to give your strands a clarifying treatment without stripping your hair. This should be done once a month when you do a herbal mud wash. This mixture gives your scalp a detailed cleanse.

Clarifying scalp treatment #2:

Eucalyptus oil
Tea Tree oil

Hair Growth and strengthening:
2 ounces of Extra virgin olive oil
2 ounces of cold pressed coconut oil
3 ounces of unrefined Sunflower seed oil

How to use:
Massage a small amount into your scalp daily, after 30 days of continuous use you will see a difference in your hair growth rate. This blend stimulates hair growth, blocks DHT, improves hair elasticity, provides incredible shine and the sunflower seed oil gives you extra protection against the harmful rays of the sun.

Summertime protection
1/2 cup grapeseed oil
1/2 cup sunflower seed oil
1/4 cup coconut oil or 1 cup of unrefined shea butter

How to use:
Massage 1 teaspoon of oil mix thoroughly over  hair strands, use more if your hair is long but do not overly saturate your hair. Rubbing it through your hair will distribute oils that will give you protection against the sun and other elements. Sunflower seed oil protects hair from absorption of the ultra violet rays. Grapeseed oil and coconut oil also have heat protection properties. Please note that in my opinion the best protection for our hair from the sun is a hat or scarf.

Coily Queens no breakage pre shampoo treatment
1/2 cup of grapeseed oil
1/2 cup of coconut oil
Why this simple mix works. The grapeseed works to untangle your hair easier as you finger comb. The coconut oil reduces the protein loss during shampooing of your hair. So both benefits results in significant less breakage and you see more growth retention.

How to use:
Apply one tablespoon at a time, massage the oil mix through your hair using your fingers untangling your hair completely from root to tip. This is the first step you do before each shampoo. The one cup of mix should last you 3 applications.

***Always store oils in a cool dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat.
Always spot test new oils to be sure you are not allergic. Keep in mind that essential oils such as pure peppermint oil are not good for certain health conditions like blood pressure issues, so if you have any type of health issue consult your doctor before using any essential or natural oils. Also consult your doctor before using any of these oils on children.

  1. I like what I see on your site. 2 questions- 1. what are your thoughts about adding vegetable glycerin to hair regimen 2. what ingredients create the difference between a deep conditioner and a leave in conditioner?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Hello! Vegetable glycerin is a okay product, it is a quick fix product for those experiencing dry brittle hair. The Coily Queens regimen is designed to correct your moisture issues so that you do not have to use a creamy leave in on a daily basis and also you do not have to make spritzers for your hair to use daily. When the regimen is practiced with all the steps together you will not need to spritz nor add a creamy product daily. So you will save time and money once your hairs porosity level is normal and your hair is well hydrated, strong and lubricated. The regimen recommends investing in a good leave in product so if an individual opts to make their own leave in product using glycerin and other natural products that is more than alright. You can use glycerin all year round if that is your choice.....A deep conditioner contains formulations and ingredients which are only tested to stay on the hair for a short period ot time and the intention of the seller is that the consumer is rinsing the product off. Some formulations are not meant to be left on the hair because they may not hurt your hair strands but they do work themselves up towards your scalp and absorb inside your hair follicles and you do not know what those formulations are doing to your scalp long term wise, one day you just start having scalp issues and will not even be able to pin point what could of caused them. Leave in conditioners are formulated to be able to stay on the hair, those ingredients have been tested to see what side effects if any will occur from being left on the hair daily. For these reasons even if the ingredients look similar, we are not privy to know percentages and formulations so what may look similar could very well not be. It is best to only use a deep conditioner as a rinse out conditioner unless it states that you can also use it as a leave in.

  3. Hi Vee Mack! Been lurking on your board for about an hour now, and I'm at my wits end! Just BC'd three weeks ago from locs and I'm beginning to hear the Locs calling my name again. But before I give up totally, I am really struggling with moisture retention. Now, there are about a bazillion "methods" out there and so far over the past 3wks, I've tried three different ones, without any truly successful results. And feels like I'm gonna need two more jobs to support my hair habit. I'm giving myself 3months and if I can't seem to find a method that will produce real results in retaining moisture...LOC it UP. I'm going to try your Nine Day Method. Also, so far, your's is the only method that I've run across that says to use oil on the scalp daily. Everyone else is saying: Oil is not a moisturizer." No, it's not, but I would think all the washing, co-washing, dc'ing, acv rinses etc, the scalp could use a bit of oil. I also believe in utilizing oils in conjunction with daily scalp massages. But here's a question: I don't have a heat cap, so what would be an easy way to get heat onto the head when dc'ing? I'm going to start your regimen on Wednesday..just washed yesterday, but shampoo had sulfates. I just read the ingredients incorrectly and identified the sulfate as a silicone. Shampoo has no silicones, but the 2nd ingredient is Ammonium Laurly Sulfate...don't know how I got that confused! Anyway, I'll have to head off to my local Walmart in search of an inexpensive Sulfate-free shampoo and once I complete my nine days, I'll be back with my report. Thanks for all your great information!

  6. Hey Vee,

I am preparing my grocery list to purchase the hair oil in your hair softening recipe but I cannot seem to find unrefined emu oil anywhere. Do you know where I can purchase it or if I can substitute it with another oil?

    1. You've probably found the answer to your question being that this is over a year old, however, I order Emu oil from Vitacost. I think they may have gone up on the price but its still worth every penny.
